A non video post

I just realized that all my recent posts seem to be quickly slopped together with the only real sustenance being a youtube video. Not true for most of them. I try to think about what I put up so here's a link to the best blog I've ever read. You may remember Elyse from the first season of America's Next Top Model. Well she's still out there working out a measly model's sustenance in mostly Hong Kong, but she goes other places too!

Time to Learn!

Bored already? Well I am and I find it's time to learn a little bit more. Here's something I found while perusing Youtube. I kind of get what a hedge fund is, but why is the economy so complicated!? It's just numbers being moved around.

Kelly to cheer you up

Holiday Blues?

I know over Christmas I get annoyed and bored sitting around all day with my family. If you have this problem too here are some tips.

1. One way I counteract annoyance at Christmas rituals is by wholeheartedly taking up the ones you enjoy. I make paper snow flakes, change my desktop background to a new Holiday picture everyday, make cookies, run around in the snow.

2. Make sure to take time for yourself. I personally do this by taking baths and reading.

3. Keep things normal. You can do this by visiting the same websites, listening to old podcasts that remind you of times you're not at home, or by trying to keep you schedule the same.

4. Be more busy then ever. Try out a new hobby. I personally am going for oragami and have been working on butterflies. Also I'm working out even more over break(both to combat the heaps of candy and the open time).

5. Have fun. Remember that the Holiday is to be enjoyed, so don't be boring or dwell on bad thoughts. Go ahead and turn your usual boring christmas into something a bit more interesting.

Penny Arcade

For those of you who enjoy video games you should enjoy this web comic. It's been going on for about 5 years or so now (probably longer). Luckily if you're not into reading extensive back comics you can really pick it up wherever. Although most of the comics are about video games not all of them are and usually they have a joke that will work even if you don't know everything about the ups and downs of the current video game culture.

P.s-thank my roomie if you enjoy this. Reading her blog got me to actually want to work on mine again.

xkcd

xkcd is a mix of math, science, wit, current events, and a new perspective. If you're not into math or science you might find it hard to keep up on all the posts, but most of the time they're rather simple and always funny.

The Moth

The Moth is a not for profit group that presents spoken stories that are taped live and without notes. You can reach them through their site (where you can buy cds and read up on them) and you can also get a free podcast in itunes. Some of the stories are comedic and others are very sad, but all are true and in no way boring.

The IT Crowd

The IT Crowd is a british comedy from Graham Linehan. It's the office with less people: two extreme steriotypes of geeky people, a "normal" woman, and a usually absent goth man. Unlike the office the plots are more wild and the humour is less bizzare for the American sense of humour.

The first two seasons are already out and are currently being showed on IFC. If you don't have IFC you can flip over to youtube and find all the episodes. So far there are only 12 episodes total, but the third season is in the works and will hopefully be good even after the yearlong hiatus.

You might not love this show enough to make a cross stitch, but it will make you laugh.

Free Rice

Free Rice is a website that donates rice to United Nations World Food Program. They do this by making money from advertisements on their website. To get people to reload their website many times they have questions for you to answer. The original part was vocabulary. They've added since then many other subjects. You can do anything from Spanish vocab to world geography. For each question you correctly answer they donate 20 grains of rice.

Wormwood

If you're into weird sci-fi supernatural soap operas then you'll like this, but if you're into believe able characters placed within a riveting storyline then you'll enjoy it also. There's an alcoholic Dr. Xander Crow who has been called to the town of Wormwood by the dream of a dead woman. Also in the show is a heavy metal rocker named Jimmy Details. With people like this to Deidre Frost the local cafe owner and poison maker it seems impossible for it to be at all realistic, but you will soon be entraped in the world of this small town.

You can subscribe to this podcast via itunes and also at their website. The entire first season is online and eleven of the second season are up. Although it is perpeted to update weekly this doesn't always happen, but once you're hooked you'll never give up.

Blogs of Interest

There are a couple of blogs I keep up on around here. The first is Belle de Jour's. She is the somewhat witty writing hooker from England. Although she is no longer a hooker she still is amusing at times. Also you might of heard of her show. It's on ITV2 in England or Showtime in America (although america's is one season behind).

Another blog I've been perusing lately is by Rufus Dayglo the new artist for Tank Girl. If you are at all interested in this wonderful revival then I suggest stopping by and checking out the many sneak peek pictures he's putting up. Enjoy. (also for some reason both of these are from the uk)

Election Times

Yeah I bet it's getting annoying by now. Everyone's all about who's going to be the new president, but can you really blame us? This outcome could change a lot of things and no doubt will have effect on the next 4 years. In that vein here's a cute you tube video on Electing a US President that explains exactly how the electoral system works.

Now that you know how the system works, here's one of the many places you can keep up with what early votes are going where. Enjoy.

Dawe and Clarke

Dawe and Clarke are a sketch comedy duo that have some wonderful political sketches including "The Front Fell Off".

Adult Swim

Today was an especially bad day for me, so here's an especially great thing. On Adult swim .com there are some great games like 5 minutes to kill yourself(clearly not great for all audiences).

Also you can catch new shows and random episodes that have already come out. Lately they've had several family guy's at all times and one of my new favorites is superjail.

Superjail is very graphic and sporadic. Fun characters with continually new ideas make this show worth a watch.

Kingdom of Loathing

Kingdom of Loathing is a MMORPG for non intense gamers. You can play as a saucemancer and many other characters. The currency is in meat and puns are more then necessary (alliteration isn't scarce either). The pirate's cove and lyric dungeon are some of my favorites, also don't forget to have a few drinks at the end of the day.

Questionable Content

Is not actually very questionable. This sassy Indie Web comic does push the boundaries from time to time, but if you get out occasionally and watch TV you'll not be shocked in the least. Almost every comic gives a good laugh or two and the drawing is great. The characters are love-able and neurotic. To meet the cool characters at Coffee of Doom click this link.

Touching moments

*be ware if you didn't cry during the notebook*

So here's a little comedy and a little hallmark. Thanks to NBC you can catch the office online and at the end of the first episode there's a lovely touching moment. For those who don't care for that it's short enough to ignore.

Shroud of the Thwacker

This is a comedy, mystery, time traveling, fo-history novel by comedian Chris Elliott. You might of seen this actor tucked away in movies such as There's something about Mary (but not Home Alone, that's another guy).
Sure this guy's look doesn't scream comedic genius, but I swear this book is golden. Within the covers (which have a wonderfully detailed map on the insides) you will meet many screwball characters including a robot named Boilerplate and his evil genius creator Archibald Champion.

I have no doubts that anyone with even a tiny funny bone with find this book hilarious. Also there is some adult content, but nothing a somewhat mature teenager couldn't handle.

Avoiding homework

So I'm trying this biweekly for a while. If that's too much I'll pull it back and if it works out well I might try more. For now though, here's some things to avoid homework with:

More flash games!
-If you like balloons or monkeys this game is fun. Somewhat strategic, but really just silly (the third one is the best). Tower Defense

-Indecision 2008: An Inconvenient Game : In this game from Comedy Central you get to fix the energy and global warming problems of America. There are many hilarious outcomes including a monster battle.

To keep yourself busy mentally while playing these games you might want to check some of these podcasts that are good for a laugh:
-You look nice today : again available through itunes or follow the link to their website. This one is rather nice for a silly laugh. It's three guys who talk about sitting problems in airport waiting rooms, ham, and their very own man school.
-Dick Dynamo the 5th Dimensional Man :
This is a lovely comedy spoof on old time radio. I've you're a man, woman, vegetarian, or alien you will be offended (but in a good way). Also this podcast is not all ages appropriate.

That's all for now folks. I hope this is enough to keep you busy for a little while.
